Planning our 2013

It’s the new year and I feel like there’s a giant blank slate in front of me. It feels like there’s so much opportunity ahead of us. So much hope and anticipation for something that I can’t quite put my finger on. For the first time, we spent December 31 talking about our goals for the next year. Some of the highlights were: family nights, date nights, less technology, clean eating, crossing off more baby steps, and getting started on the basement.

We haven’t put plans to action for any of the goals, but there’s so much freshness in these goals. Like we’re starting new in 2013. The irony is that at least half of the goals are things we already do, we just want to be more intentional about them. The others are things we are not good at and haven’t spent time doing. If I could put 2013 into one word I would summarize it as the year of family. We’re focusing more on us. Our family has changed a lot in the past five years. We were two lives joined together. We spent a few years living the newlywed lifestyle of still leading semi-independent lives joined together. We took the leap and had a baby. While it didn’t feel like it rocked our world, it definitely changed the way our lives had been. We both changed and grew in different ways. We didn’t necessarily do it together as one. Now, with another son we feel like we’re in a better place. We’re more comfortable in our own skin. Maybe it’s like when people talk about a child completing their family. Whatever it is, now is the time to focus on us and what we want our family dynamic to be. We’re going to spend time and energy to make it a happy place to be. Make it a fun place to be. And make it a place full of love and devotion.

I’m excited about the upcoming year. I’m excited to start it off with a couple of months at home with my two littlest boys. I’m excited to focus on these goals and create routines that will become a part of every day life. I can’t wait to see what 2013 brings to our family. I plan on documenting it better than I did in 2012. I want to make sure that we remember this time forever. Life with a toddler and newborn will be over before we know it. We’ll be on to new goals and new routines, but the foundation will be built. I’m predicting a great year! Watching my boys grow and develop, watching my husband become a father to two sons, and watching our family mold change.

Do you have family goals and resolutions?

  1. what great thoughts for the new year. i love that you guys sat down and talked about your ideas for the new year. no resolutions for us for the new year… we’re just flying by the seat of our pants and that seems to work for us!

    1. Sitting down and talking about goals is not our typical style. Sitting down and doing a budget every month and discussing our goals has helped make this a new style. It was pretty fun and got me really excited about the new year and new beginnings!
