I vote for a potty trained toddler!

I’m watching the election results but choosing not to comment on them. I voted this morning and I’m glad I participated. The bigger thing going on in my life right now is that we spent the night taking care of a bad diaper rash. A screaming toddler who won’t let you touch him who was on a pooping kick this weekend. We haven’t figured out what was causing all the pooping and most of the time it wasn’t worth the effort required to clean him up. But all the acid bothered his sensitive skin and caused a bad diaper rash.

We’re mixing a cocktail of triple anti-biotic and destin while hoping that they calm this thing down. He spent about an hour in warm water and I had to restart the bath twice because he pooped in there. Luckily, after an hour he asked to get out and sit on the potty. Before I realized what he was doing, he pooped…a lot. As much as I don’t like poop in a bath tub, I am beyond happy that neither of these instances caused a diaper change. Whew! And, based on the amount of bodily excretion, I’m hopeful that the pooping will stop long enough to get this thing under control.

It may not be a glamorous topic, but this is a typical day in the life of a mother. In mere weeks I’ll have another little body to fill my days counting poop and pee diapers and making sure his bodily functions are on track. I’m glad they are cute, otherwise it’d be hard to spend so much time thinking, talking, and cleaning up poop! {Someone forgot to tell me about this “side affect” of having children!}

Do you have any great diaper rash tips?

  1. Fiona's Mom

    We are diaper rash experts. Fiona’s neurogenic bowels means we always have diaper rash to contend with. Maalox can be helpful. But we usually do what you do – neosporin type ointment and the purple (not blue) Desitin. A little vinegar in the bath water helps too. Don’t use corn starch as that can kick start a yeast infection (even in boys). Good luck!

    1. I just had a friend tell me Maalox too. I hope I’m not making it worse – we were out of purple and only had the blue Desitin. I was wondering what to try in the bath so I just stuck with plain water. Thanks for the tips, Sara!

        Blue desitin won’t make it worse. It just has a much lower zinc content than the purple. Zinc is what helps the healing the most!

        I never would have guessed 2 years ago that I would know so much about zinc’s magic on baby butts! 🙂

      2. No kidding! I never read about any of this “fun” stuff in the baby books! 🙂

  2. Awe poor little guy – I hope his rash clears up. I know too well about the poopy baths… NOT fun… but diaper explosions are even worse. We haven’t tried potty training yet… soon tho!

    1. I don’t think he’s ready for potty training. He gets scared and cries a lot when he sits on it and actually goes. I think it has more to do with the movement itself and less about using the potty. Either way, he’s not ready yet.

  3. […] for the stereotypical potty trained boy. I’ve wasted enough Internet space talking about pooping and more pooping. I’ll just say that a two year has a mind {and attitude} of his own. He […]
